As those of you who’ve been reading MIND THE MOSS since its early days may recall, I go weak in the knees for a good bog. There’s something about a chirping, rippling, open-air expanse of moss and bushy grass—surrounded by woods or mountain—that makes me swoon, like Orson Welles near a bottle of Paul Masson. And since the hills of New England are currently exploding with a million shade of green (and lots of gnats) today seemed like a fine time to spotlight not one but TWO banner bogs in Vermont.

Why a bog double feature? Here’s why. In most cases, bog hikes tend to be simple strolls along relatively flat paths and dreamy wooden bridges that take you into the jetsam of the wetland. But what would a *challenging* bog hike look like? How would you undertake a more rigorous ramble across an environment that’s level and spongy?
