Any recommendations for spray to keep the black flies away or least to minimize the effect ?

For stuff that you can actually apply to your skin (IE, products that don't contain DEET), I've had success with White Mountain Insect Repellent salve. I've seen it stocked at Renys stores in Maine, and you can order it online too. In general, anything containing citronella oil is usually a good bet, provided the smell doesn't bother you too much.

I usually wear my glasses on hikes because I'm nearsighted, but during this time of the year, I also wear them for partial protection from dive-bombing (eye-bombing?) flies! Especially the deer flies, which may be even fouler than black flies.
