I love Sachuest Point! Words to the wise: You need binoculars at minimum to see the ducks in any detail, a spotting scope is even better. Maybe more importantly, bring ice spikes or whatever they're called in winter if it's been snowy or wet.
Interesting list, and I love the alternatives, so thank you. Just one disagreement - I walked the back dune trails at Crane Beach in early December and it was exquisite. And hardly anyone there. One of my all time favorite walks. You can choose to walk on the beach if you want. But the back dunes, and the shore on the back of the bay, are not to be missed. Sometimes you even get rewarded with a snowy owl staring down from a Doon ridge at you. So just go in winter. And I believe off season it is free but check first.
One of the three routes up the South Bubble in Acadia has become muddier and wider every year. It needs a rest desperately!

great post - we need to let these trails recover. i always prefer off the beaten path trails to avoid crowds.
