What a great story; my first trip to Chicago in 1954 was a depressing jolt -downtown buildings were dirty and grimy. Last summers visit there was a wonderful experience, wish i had known about this trail.
Thank you, Fred. And wow; you’ve truly seen the city go through different life cycles! Next time you’re there, definitely consider jumping on the Outerbelt someplace. I had no idea how many woods, wetlands, and waterways are scattered around the city.
This is so cool! I've only been to Chicago once -- for an Avon Walk -- and I loved it!
I've been wanting to tell you about this post from another blogger I follow. It's about a series of parks that have been created in Seoul, South Korea. If you're ever interested in looking outside the US for urban hiking experiences, this might be a place to visit!
Oh jeez….this might be the thing that finally gets me to Seoul. The food and the South Korean film industry have already been tempting me to find a way to visit. Thanks for the intel, Andrea!
I enjoyed reading this report. I grew up on the South Side with much appreciation for the many city parks (even with free swimming pools!). I have walked at Lake Katherine in Palos and the Cal-Sag and even saw a beaver on the trail once. First I've heard of this trail and that you can even camp nearby.
We actually swung by the Lake Katherine Nature Center (and got some killer tacos nearby) the day before commencing our thru-hike, when I initially got into town! It was so gorgeous. The fact that you saw a beaver on one of the regional trails is wild. Makes me want to turn around and go right back out there.
