Mind The Moss has never been a Mountain-Forward publication, as lots of outdoorsy magazines are. This isn’t the kind of newsletter that you read if you want to climb the most enduringly cherished mountains in New England—generally, you read the Moss if you want to avoid those well-tread mountaintops and discover the armpits of the great outdoors. The rock formations that looks like granite gumdrops. The cave that features possible bloodstains on the walls and was once closed to the public with an iron gate. But the tallest mountains are hard to ignore forever. Occasionally, they grab you by your shirt and throw you into the boreal trees and lichen-crusted boulders. Last spring, we paid a visit to Mount Katahdin, the tallest mountain in Maine and one of the gnarliest hikes in the northeast. This year, we’re going to Vermont’s superlative dome.
