Loved this post, Jay. I may need to write a sequel to this one, on the way myths can become corrupted and inspire bad things. It could also be interesting to dig for examples of myths that were leveraged for good and set aside before the downslope.
Myths are oak trees grown from little factoids. I'll have to explore more of these.
